Downloading Windows defender antivirus

You can download Windows defender on any versions of the Microsoft operating system: Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7. When downloaded, it can be deployed as Windows Defender Offline

Windows Security Essentials or Windows Defender Security Center may prompt you to download and run the Windows Defender and run it offline. This is very important to prevent your files from being compromised.

To download, get a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with free space of at least 250 MB. Don’t worry, Microsoft’s Windows defender walks you the entire process of creating the removable media. Don’t forget to choose the bit version suitable for your PC.

Using Windows Defender antivirus

Before we discuss how to use Windows defender, here are a few reasons why you may need its services.

  •  Windows Security or Windows Defender Security Center detects rootkits or other highly persistent malware on your PC. You are alerted through a message prompt to use Windows Defender Offline.
  •  You suspect your PC might have malware that is hiding on it, but your security software doesn’t detect anything.

Here is how to run a scan using Windows defender offline.

  • Insert the removable media into your PC.
  • Select Start, and then select SettingsUpdate & SecurityWindows SecurityVirus & threat protection
  • On the Virus & threat protection screen, do one of the following: In an up-to-date version of Windows 10: Under Current threats, select Scan options. In previous versions of Windows: Under Threat history, select Run a new advanced scan
  • Select Windows Defender Offline scan, and then select Scan now

You’ll be prompted that you’re about to be signed out of Windows. After you are signed out, your PC should restart. Windows Defender Offline will load and perform a quick scan of your PC in the recovery environment. This takes about 15 minutes. When the scan has finished, your PC will automatically restart to Windows.
