If you are starting out as a freelancer, Upwork is a great platform. I congratulate you for getting it right from the beginning.
When I started in 2016, I started with freelancer.com and it was hell. I would get hired by some Indians and Pakistan guys, some would say they pay after every week with very strenuous job requirement – to submit a 3,000-word article per day for 7 days before getting paid as one who is just starting out, could look promising even though it’s strenuous.
But coming to find out that you have been scammed after submitting 21,000 words worth of article, is heartbreaking and could cost you a whole lot of money you will make with freelancing if eventually, you get discouraged with such disappointment.
The difference with Upwork is that it verifies both sellers and buyers on its platform, unlike freelancer.com. And the Upwork model is saner and with more job options than freelancer.com.
Fiverr is also a great place to kickstart your freelance journey. If you can scale through on Fiverr you will make good money also. But there is something mentally draining with Fiverr. Almost a large percent of buyers on the platform come with a $5 mentality, so it’s really hard to break that chain with Fiverr except you are selling special services like Business plans, whitepaper writing etc (I CAN TEACH YOU HOW TO OFFER THIS SERVICE TOO).
But the unique thing with Upwork is that you will mostly be dealing directly with this small business rather than outsourcers who will stress the hell out of you. When someone outsource work to you, the person is not the direct owner of the job, so it’s very likely you will be held down on one $5 for close to 3 working days because the requirement had changed from the owner and then before the outsourcer get through to you, you should be done with the order and would have to offer revision on the order, and most times for FREE.
So would you rather work with middlemen or directly with business owners?
If your answer is yes, then, Upwork is your best choice.
